Call for Editathon and/or Hackathon ideas at EduWiki 2013

The EduWiki Conference 2013 will be held in Cardiff on 1-2 November. This is the second edition of this conference organised by WMUK with a focus on the education sector.

In an effort to provide a wider range of activities over the weekend of the conference, we are now calling for ideas for possible editathons and/or hackathons to take place in Cardiff during or immediately after the conference. Some ideas that would be very welcome include:

  • a high-profile cultural institution (i.e. a GLAM event)
  • updating Cardiff pages on Wikivoyage and/or Wikipedia
  • the Doctor Who experience in Cardiff Bay
  • hacking the Mediawiki education-related extensions, such as this or this

If you're interested in leading (or taking on an active role) in these or any other similar activities in Cardiff between 1 and 3 November please use the template below and/or email education@wikimedia.org.uk by Friday 6 September 2013 at noon BST. We are particularly looking forward to hearing from people who already have the relevant links needed for the events. Wikimedia UK would be able to cover the event expenses. This call is now closed.

Ideas proposed

Wikinews Photojournalism

  • Name of proposer: LauraHale
  • Session type: Self purposed field trip
  • Description: We'll distribute some guides for doing photojournalism on Wikinews and have a half hour session or so on Wikinews reporting requirements, find a list of some events going on in Cardiff that day and encourage users to attend any of these events. At the end of the day, we'll meet up again and walk people through the process of sharing and trying to get published a Wikinews photo essay.

Comments

  • As this is EduWiki related, I would see photography workshopping primarily aimed at already-established Wikimedians.
Depending on the mix of attendees, we would want to also give a basic-grounding in using 'newsie' images to best effect. Laura's sports-focus shows in her reporting, and — when I've time — I like taking pictures too. --Brian McNeil / talk 13:16, 29 August 2013 (UTC)
Lots of great transferable skills are involved in something like this. There may even be scope to develop a workshop for basic photo skills relating to commons first, and then a further event aimed at experienced Wikimedians. This way we could be more inclusive while offering a valued service to new or less experienced Wikimedians. --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 13:31, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

Education Program/Courses Extension for UK HEIs

  • Name of proposer: Darren Stephens
  • Session type: Workshop
  • Description: Introduce the Courses extension to those who may not be aware of it, and draw requirements to see how it might be further localised for use in the UK

Lua/Scribunto Worshop

  • Name of proposer: Darren Stephens
  • Session type: Workshop/Hack
  • Description: The introduction of the Scribunto extension and the integration of Lua into Wikimedia projects allows for more richness and functionality in the provision of templates for a numb rod projects. A short introduction to constructing modules using Scribunto and the Lua language might be a useful session.

Education wiki-projects/assignments - mapping how and where

  • Name of proposer: Martin Poulter + Graeme Arnott
  • Session type: Workshop/discussion
  • Description: Capturing examples of wiki-projects and assignments in the higher eduction sector across the UK from conference delegates involved directly or indirectly with such activities.
